On a number of occasions now I have had the pleasure of not only attending Simon Guest’s presentations, but also having him beat me hands down on Guitar Hero at SAF! I noticed however at Simon’s Blog he has posted up 3 decks he presented at TechEd 2009. They all encompass “Cloud Computing”, something very relevant for a number of enterprises and not to be taken likely – my view on this has always been that where suits cloud computing can be extremely beneficial, but definitely not a one size fits all or something that is that new either.

Simon Guest is Senior Director, Technical Strategy at Microsoft. The decks and more are here.

Ok not strictly relevant in the world of enterprise tech but nonetheless I was really interested to see the application of OLED in a mainstream consumer device, it looks very impressive and as you can imagine the contrast ratio is stunning.

The Exchange Team posted up a video of Adam Glick from the Exchange mobility team, he runs through a couple of high level features included in the 2010 product.

Interesting features include:

  • Granular control over approved devices (with built-in reporting capabilities i.e. Adam Jacobs is using an iPhone)
  • One click free/busy information (very nicely executed, check out the video)
  • Single click unified comms/voicemail playback without launching Media Player
  • Voicemail transcripts (I really like this, when I am out and about I really don’t want to check a VM unless I have to!)

One other interesting point is how Exchange is really becoming quite mobility rich (even though there is MDM Adam states that they want to look after other ActiveSync licensees).

I really like the content over at Lifehacker and this post is no exception, there is however a feature mentioned that for me wins above all. Surely it is granular UAC control, I hear you say? Whilst this is a welcome addition, alas no…it is “Run as different user”, with Windows 2000 and XP this was out of the box functionality, however for one reason or another it was stripped from Vista. I can only imagine that it was something to do with UAC (perhaps the Run as admin and different user together seemed too confusing?). Back in Feb 2008 Mark Russinovich published a shell add-in for Vista and peace in escalated privileges land was restored once again…

In 7 this is all standard stuff, Microsoft all is forgiven….

I am sure that a lot of you have by now seen Apple’s response to the “Laptop Hunters” advertising campaign – if you have not already seen it the video is below. However what I found completely ironic was a report on Cult of Mac stating that Steve Jobs had recently fallen foul of a phishing attack, now what personal computer would he be using?
