Once again Oracle have raised the prices of their 11g database server, in some cases this is hitting its customers by a whopping 40% increase!!!

Remember when you buy Oracle you get taxed by core instead of Microsoft SQL 2008 that charges you by physical CPUs, much fairer in my opinion.

A couple of weeks back Amazon took unfair advantage of their heavily content secured Kindle eBook reader. The Kindle loads books that are embedded with digital rights management (DRM) and is permanently connected to a mobile data network allowing quick access to Amazon’s online book store and (as reported) big brother access to the device.

After removing George Orwell’s Animal Farm automatically from all Kindle devices Amazon made this statement:

The Kindle edition books Animal Farm by George Orwell. Published by MobileReference (mobi) & Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) by George Orwell. Published by MobileReference (mobi) were removed from the Kindle store and are no longer available for purchase. When this occurred, your purchases were automatically refunded. You can still locate the books in the Kindle store, but each has a status of not yet available. Although a rarity, publishers can decide to pull their content from the Kindle store.

This was later on followed by an apology.

The lesson learned is that DRM is bad.

Recent rumours are flying that this week Yahoo will announce a shift in it’s search technology to Microsoft’s Bing. Yahoo’s alledged request of an upfront several hundred million dollars payment caused yet another breakdown, which is now supposedly overcome.

A Microsoft retail store plan has been leaked. In a comment from Microsoft, “As a part of our process in briefing creative agencies, we shared some early prototypes and concepts of our retail store plans. No final decisions have been made. As we previously announced, we are on track to open retail stores this Fall..” I really hope it happens because it looks great!
