Earlier this week a requirement was made to purchase additional voice-over-IP handsets, usually we would have purchased devices from a “major communications vendor” (I’ll recite no names) as our current OCS deployment is predominantly made up of remote call control users.

However given that our strategy this year is to really push Office Communications Server with Enterprise Voice (EV) this requirement was quickly turned down!

Just to clarify EV is Microsoft’s native software-driven VoIP solution, which is driven by the Office Communicator client and where standard USB audio input/output devices can be used, thus complete flexibility on where you choose to work from (my personal device preference would be the CX300 or Calisto 540 – these are both based upon an identical Microsoft reference design).

Interestingly, what I did notice (extremely quickly I might add) was the difference in cost, a Microsoft USB device comes in at under £100, whereas the predecessor handset was over £350 – a £250 saving, which as you can imagine really adds up fast when you have hundreds/thousands of users.

Yet another reason why Microsoft’s software driven voice solution, Communications Server, could compliment your enterprise voice solution and allow your CFO to live happily ever after…

P.S. This is not a fairy tale!

Did you know that 2001: A Space Odyssey was one of the earliest motion picture depictions of the Videophone? I love this movie, especially this scene…enjoy!

In the last 6 or so months the big G has made a number of aquisitions, approximately 13 (nothing new here), however two of them in particular are of interest to me…

My guess (and hopes) are that they are looking to strengthen their Google Voice proposition in addition to extending it’s reach beyond US based customers.

I guess we’ll just have to watch this space…

Taken from Brett Johnson’s Blog:

On Wednesday May 19th, the Unified Communications Interoperability Forum (UCIF) is announcing its formation. UCIF is a non-profit, open alliance of worldwide technology companies that will develop interoperability profiles, certification, and testing programs in order to enable UC interoperability scenarios. Founding members include Acme Packet, Aspect, AudioCodes, Broadcom, BroadSoft, Brocade, ClearOne, Jabra, Plantronics, RADVISION, Siemens Enterprise Communications, and Teliris Founders: HP, Juniper Networks, Microsoft, Logitech / LifeSize, and Polycom.

The UCIF’s vision is to enable interoperability of UC hardware and software across enterprises, service providers, and consumer clouds, as a means of protecting customer’s existing investments, simplifying their transition to more extended UC networks, and generating incremental business opportunity for all stakeholders in the ecosystem.  This forum’s contributions will be vital to the successful implementation of UC solutions by our customers. It will certify interoperability scenarios like video integration between rooms systems and desktop solutions.

Not only will UCIF improve the communications experience for our customers, but it will also underscore Microsoft’s commitment to interoperability. The success of this forum is absolutely critical to our competing in this space.
