I’m really keen to start using Bing, but like most I have a habit of pumping my search terms into the IE search bar. Never fear the Bing search provider add-in is here

A while back I installed Office Communicator 2007 R2 in an R1 environment and interestingly as other sites suggest you can login and use an R1 OCS server with the R2 client.

A number of things transpired and therefore I would strongly recommend that you avoid this in production.

  • As you might expect R2 options are not functional
  • Office Communicator Phone edition was no longer able to login
  • Enterprise Messenger for BlackBerry was also unable to login
  • There may be more issues that I have not been able to re-produce

Logic suggests that after logging into an OCS R1 server with the R2 client, a number of database updates are automatically applied. This can be reversed by deleting and re-creating the OCS profile. Curious people should avoid, avoid and avoid! [:)]

With Netbook computers flooding the notebook market, Windows 7 has been restricted based upon system specification, rather than the previous view of application concurrency (3 at one time in Vista Starter Edition). This will no doubt allow Microsoft to compete the Linux based platforms, like Asus’s custom Xandros distribution. A really good call of you ask me!

Other Windows 7 starter features to NOT be included:

  • Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the “Windows Basic” or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
  • Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
  • The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
  • Multi-monitor support.
  • DVD playback.
  • Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
  • Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
  • Domain support for business customers.
  • XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.
